100 Years of State Parks in Idaho
Celebrate Idaho’s Past, Experience their Future
July 12, 2008 every state park in Idaho will kick off two years of planned events statewide by holding a special celebration to commemorate Idaho’s 100 years of state parks. Heyburn State Park, Idaho’s very first state park, and the oldest park in the Pacific Northwest, located in Plummer, was created in 2008. Comprised of approximately 5,500 acres of land and 2,300 acres of water. Heyburn State Park includes three lakes; Chatcolet, Benewah, and Hidden Lakes, with St. Joe River meandering along the eastern boundary of the park
Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (IDPR) has a Mission “To improve the quality of life in Idaho through outdoor recreation and resource stewardship.” IDPR are innovators in outdoor recreation, committed to excellent service and resource stewardship. Idaho’s 30 beautiful state parks and recreational trail ways encourage the human spirit and cultivate vitality for more then 2.5 million visitors annually who are willing to take advantage of the vast natural opportunities they have to offer.
During the Centennial Celebration, IDPR is hoping to generate a new awareness, for Idaho families and visitors alike of all the recreational resources and outdoor activities available in Idaho’s state parks, forests and waterways.
By introducing Idaho’s youth to the wonders of the outdoors and the plethora of experiences that await them we can keep our children healthy and active in this fast-paced age of techno-gadgetry.
