Welcome to Great Basin National Park

In the shadow of 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak, 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Come to Great Basin National Park to experience the solitude of the desert, the smell of sagebrush after a thunderstorm, the darkest of night skies, and the beauty of Lehman Caves. Far from a wasteland, the Great Basin is a diverse region that awaits your discovery.

What Is The Great Basin?

Shrouded in myth and mystery since its discovery by Europeans over 150 years ago, the Great Basin is still misunderstood today. Called dead, barren, and desolate, visitors are surprised to find it alive, fruitful, and full of wonders. Great Basin National Park preserves a small representative piece of this larger region, whose boundaries can be defined three different ways.

Turn Out The Lights

Two-thirds of Americans cannot see the Milky Way from their backyards, and nearly all live in places with measurable light pollution. But because of its remote location, Great Basin National Park provides exceptional visibility of the night sky. In fact, in 2005 the National Park Service Night Sky Team found Great Basin to be one of the darkest places in the country.

New Exhibits at the Great Basin Visitor Center

Park staff and contract exhibit designers are hard at work finalizing the designs for exhibits for the new Great Basin Visitor Center in Baker, Nevada. Rich in color, texture, and interactive features, these exhibits will orient visitors to the entire Great Basin region and showcase the diversity of our natural and culltural resources. To learn how you can help with this project, visit the Great Basin National Park Foundation website : www.greatbasinfoundation.org.

Climate

There is almost an 8,000 foot (2,400 m) difference in elevation between Wheeler Peak and the valley floor. Weather conditions in the park vary with elevation. In late spring and early summer, days in the valley may be hot, yet the snowpack may not have melted at high elevations. The Great Basin is a desert, with low relative humidity and sharp drops in temperature at night. In the summer fierce afternoon thunderstorms are common. Weather conditions are highly variable. Please come prepared for all types of weather. It can snow any time of the year at high elevations.

WYOMING STATE PARKS

At Wyoming’s state parks, breathtaking scenery, wildlife and all sorts of recreational opportunities abound. In park reservoirs, visitors can swim, boat, wind surf, water ski and fish – for walleye, trout and several other species of fish. Many parks offer camping, picnicking and biking and nature trails that lead to overlooks and scenic mountain vistas. In winter, there’s ice fishing, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

Countless bird and animal species call Wyoming’s state parks home. Visitors might see black bear, red squirrel, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, elk or bison. Bald and golden eagles soar overhead and geese and ducks paddle in the ponds and reservoirs.

A Proclamation by President GEORGE W. BUSH

Great Outdoors Month, 2008
A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

george-w-bush-picture.jpgFrom the Appalachian Mountains to the Grand Canyon, America is blessed with places of natural beauty where our citizens can discover the full splendor of this great Nation. During Great Outdoors Month, our Nation celebrates the grandeur of our open spaces, strengthens our commitment to preserving this heritage, and reaffirms our dedication to protecting our air, water, and lands. My Administration remains dedicated to wise stewardship of the environment, and we will continue to protect our Nation’s natural wonders. This past year, we have made great strides in helping wildlife thrive and in restoring habitat for migratory birds through cooperative conservation. Working with State and tribal officials, we are preserving important wildlife habitats and expanding the National Wildlife Refuge system. Citizens can visit takepride.gov to learn more about opportunities to care for our environment.

Great Outdoors Month is an opportunity to honor those who work to keep our natural places beautiful and to celebratermnplake.jpeg some of our country’s favorite outdoor pastimes. These activities encourage a healthy lifestyle and give Americans pride in the great American landscape. As responsible stewards of our natural resources, we can help ensure that the great outdoors will be available for enjoyment by generations to come.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2008 as Great Outdoors Month. I call on all Americans to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities, and to take time to visit and enjoy the great outdoors.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirtieth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Utah’s First National Park, Zion

Massive canyon walls ascend toward a brilliant blue sky. To experience Zion, you need to walk among the towering cliffs, or challenge your courage in a small narrow canyon. These unique sandstone cliffs range in color from cream, to pink, to red. They could be described as sand castles crowning desert canyons.
